The now 34-year-old Amsterdammer returned to Ajax on 30 January 2007, after spending more than ten years abroad. Some 15 years prior to his return to Ajax, on 8 September 1991, Davids made his debut in Ajax 1 in the match Ajax - RKC Waalwijk (5-1). Davids left Ajax in May 1996 and went on to play for AC Milan, Juventus, FC Barcelona, Internazionale and Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder played 184 official matches for Ajax, scoring 36 goals. With Ajax he won three national titles and two Dutch Cups. He also won 4 Super Cups (during his career changed to Johan Cruijff Shield), a European Super Cup, the UEFA Cup, the Champions League and the World Cup for clubs.

Edgar Davids about his imminent departure: ,,On the one hand, I am sorry that we part ways, because I am an Amsterdammer and a real Ajax man. But I cannot stay with Ajax at all cost. I have said in the past weeks that the chance was small that I would stay. At this moment, I don't know what I will do. There has been plenty of interest. I am fit and feel good enough to keep playing on a high level.”

,,When I played on Sunday, it did not occur to me that it would be the last time in an Ajax shirt. But when I went off the pitch, it felt like the last time. For that reason, I made the rounds past the stands with Johnny Heitinga, really a sort of a farewell round. It is normal to thank the fans when you have played, but I did it a bit more thoroughly this time. In the beginning of next season, I will definitely stop by to say a proper goodbye to the supporters.”
