Warriors Ease Relegation Woes

Ajax Cape Town took a step closer to Premier Soccer League safety when they beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0 at Newlands on Wednesday night.

The win moved the Urban Warriors five points clear of Bush Bucks in the second relegation spot, meaning Trott Moloto’s troops now need to win their final two games against Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

The home side dominated the match and it was only a combination of Thano Mkhonza’s brilliance in the Cosmos goal and some spurned opportunities which kept the scoreline respectable.

Ajax had a host of chances but, like in the goalless draw against Bucks on Sunday, the front men couldn’t make the most of it.

In fact, the winning goal came via an own goal from Ezenkozi captain Hilton Jordaan, who has only just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

He inadvertently turned Josep Ngake’s powerful 25-metre past Mkhonza, much to the delight of Ajax coach Gordon Igesund.

More chances came and went but, at the end of the day, Ajax got the desired result, which should also give them the physcological advantage going into Sunday’s ABSA Cup semifinal clash against the same opposition.
