Ajax and Thulani Serero have reached an agreement for the extension of his contract, which had been effective until June 30, 2015. The new and improved contract is retroactively effective from July 1, 2014, until June 30, 2017.
Serero was born on April 11, 1990, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Before coming to Amsterdam, he had played for Ajax Cape Town for three seasons. On August 7, 2011, the midfielder made his debut in the first team during the de Graafschap – Ajax (1-4) competition match. Until now, he has played 61 official matches in Ajax’s first team, scoring eight goals. “I’m very happy with this contract extension”, said the midfielder. “I love playing here. Ajax gave me the opportunity to play in Europe and I’m grateful for that. It wasn’t a difficult decision to renew my contract. The club means a lot to me and I want to repay their confidence in me by performing well on the field.”
The South African, back in Amsterdam this week, says he can still grow in the next few years. “I wasn’t at my top yet last season, I can do better. I need to score more and make more assists.” Frank de Boer agrees with this assessment. “I think that Thulani can score maybe five or six more goals per season, and can be more decisive with assists.” The head coach is full of confidence that Serero will develop himself further. “Thulani had a good season, and made big steps. He got an opportunity when Eriksen left, and he completely went for it. Now it’s time to take another step and become even more valuable for the team.”
