Jaap Stam said goodbye to the Ajax supporters on Sunday. Before the match against Vitesse, the former captain was honoured by the club, the supporters' clubs and 50,000 fans.
It was clear that Stam is still a crowd favourite in Amsterdam. The many supporters had come to the ArenA early to send off the former captain in style. Chairman John Jaakke presented Stam with an Ajax bust. ,,We are proud of the fact that you have have finished your fantastic career with our club.” While Stam with his wife and children listened to ther words of the chairman and the representatives of the supporters' clubs, the message 'Thanks Jaap' appeared on the boarding around the pitch.
Stam addressed the crowd. ,,It was not easy to retire”, he told the supporters. ,,Especially because I have become one of you in a short time. There isn't a better club in Holland for me and I am proud that I had a chance to finish my career here.”
