Suarez steals the show against Slovan

Luis Suarez led Ajax to a great Europa League win against Slovan Bratislava. The Uruguayan forward scored his team's first four goals. Mitchell Donald made it 5-0.

,,It is not important that Luis Suarez scores”, Luis Suarez said a day before Ajax's first European match of the season. It was what the captain had said several times before. It's not about Luis Suarez, it's all about Ajax. But it seems the more he says these things, the more important he becomes to Ajax. Three goals against RKC, two strikes against PSV last Sunday and now four gols against Slovan Bratislava in the playoff round of the Europa League. The inevitable question during the press conference after the match was of course how long the South-American wizard will stay at Ajax. ,,Luis is enjoying himself with us and he really wants to stay”, Martin Jol said. ,,He is very important to the team and he keeps getting better. Scoring four times in Europe does not happen often. He also helped us get going today.”

Ajax had a difficult time in the first twenty minutes against the team from Slovakia. Slovan Bratislava pulled up a wall that was hard to best for Ajax. And through some careless moments by Ajax, Slovan were dangerous at times as well. ,,If you saw the first twenty minutes, you would never have predicted we would win by 5-0'', said Jol.

But Ajax kept attacking. Suarez came close twice, before finally breaking the spell in the 43rd minute. After a great touch by Siem de Jong, he fired it in the upper right corner.

Ajax kept going in the second half. Suarez scored his second goal in te 65th minute, when Demy de Zeeuw found him on the left side of the goal, after which he kept his cool and struck. In the 79th minute (with Marvin Zeegelaar on for Miralem Sulejmani and Urby Emanuelson for Thimothée Atouba) the Suarez show rolled on. The captain struck from distance. Five minutes later, he scored yet again. The excellent Dennis Rommedahl went by his defender and crossed to Suarez, who made his second hattrick of the season, after scoring thrice in one half against RKC.

The match in the ArenA was capped off by a real ‘Toekomst goal’. Marvin Zeegelaar crossed from the left and Mitchell Donald (substitute for De Jong) made it 5-0. ,,A real Ajax goal”, Jol said.

The return leg in Bratislava is in one week. Ajax are almost certain to reach the group stage of the Europa League.
