Steven Pienaar returns in winning Young Ajax

Steven Pienaar made his return after months on the sideline with a strange injury. The young South-African hurt a nerve in his leg when he put ice on an injury for too long. He played half a match with Young Ajax on Thursday, and left a good impression in the 4-1 victory against the reserves of Willem II.

,,He made a fresh and fit impression", coach John van 't Schip said. ,,He played from the right, made good moves with which we saw the Steven of old at times. He has been out for quite a while, but at a few occasions he turned away from his defender and touched the ball through." Pienaar was one of the few players with whom the coach was satisfied. After halftime Pienaar did not return. The deal with first-team coach Ronald Koeman was that he would play only 45 minutes.

Ajax 2 and Willem II 2 were tied at 1-1 at halftime. Australian striker Jason Culina made it 0-1 from the penalty spot after 26 minutes. After a throw-in by the home side, none of the Ajax defenders reacted and an unnecessary goal allowed was the result: 1-1.

It lasted until 12 minutes before the end until Ajax regained the lead. Jerold Promes scored from a free kick. Seven minutes later Michael Krohn-Dehli, who had replaced Pienaar, crossed to Jason Culina and the Australian striker made his second of the evening. In the final minute, Daniel de Ridder scored 1-4 from a combination by Ryan Babel and Jamal Akachar.

Young Ajax: Boschker; Kujala, Promes, Valencia, Rustenberg (63. Akachar); Obodai, Lindgren, De Ridder; Pienaar (46.Krohn-Dehli), Culina, Esajas (60. Babel).
