Sigthórsson is match winner with Iceland

Several interlands took place on Tuesday evening, before Ajax could focus on preparing for its away match against Heracles Almelo. Kolbeinn Sigthórsson was the match winner for Iceland in its match against Cyprus. He scored the only goal. Nicolai Boilesen and Christian Eriksen, winning a Scandinavian derby against Norway 2-0, ensured that tension increased in their group, which includes Portugal. By defeating Finland 0-2, The Netherlands – according to various statistics – already qualifies for the European Cup 2012. According to the numbers, the Dutch team is at least the second best team, assuring itself of a spot in the final rounds.

Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Boilesen played in the Scandinavian Denmark – Norway derby, with a high Ajax content on the Danish side. In addition to coach Morten Olsen, Michael Krohn – Dehli and Dennis Rommendahl also have an Ajax past. Denmark took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to two goals from Nicklas Bendtner, and they didn’t squander their lead. Both Ajax players were on the field for the entire match, and thanks to this win, they are now even with leaders Portugal and Norway. Three teams now have thirteen points in six matches. Denmark will meet Cyprus next (October 7) and will play Portugal at home (October 11).

Gregory van der Wiel met Finland in Helsinki on Tuesday, following Friday’s historic match against San Marino (11-0). The Ajax player once again got the nod to start as right back and also was valuable on the offense. He saw the Dutch team take the lead in the first half when Kevin Strootman made good on a beautiful pass from former Ajax player Wesley Sneijder, 0-1. The Dutch team sat back after that, but still won, 0-2. During extra time, substitute Luuk de Jong scored the second goal. The Dutch team leads group E by far with 24 points in eight matches. With two more matches (at home against Moldavia on October 7), and away in Sweden (October 11), the Dutch team will not miss out on the European Cup 2012. The Dutch team will end in second place, at least. Kim Källström scored the first goal for Sweden, who was playing at San Marino, in the 64th minute. Källström plays for Olympique Lyon, who will be Ajax’s upcoming opponent in the UEFA Champions League. Sweden won the match, 0-5.

Toby Alderweireld was the only Ajax player on the Belgian team for a practice match against the USA. Jan Vertonghen wasn’t available for his country’s team due to a light injury, but was in attendance in the stadium to watch his countrymen. To the Sporza cameras, he explained that he had been on the fence for this friendly match: “If it had been an away match in Germany, I would have been available”, said the Ajax player, who hopes to play with Ajax on Saturday at Heracles. He saw Lombaerts score the only goal for Belgium in the 55th minute. Belgium is hoping that Turkey makes a mistake, which would be Belgium’s only hope of still qualifying for the European Cup. This is still a remote possibility as Turkey played to a scoreless tie- after a missed penalty kick in extra time- in Austria.

Kolbeinn Sigthórsson met Cyprus with Iceland, and Ajax’s centre forward only needed five minutes to defeat the Cypriot keeper. It was the only goal of the match. Six minutes before time, the Ajax player was substituted.

Miralem Sulejmani didn’t see action in the Serbia – Faroe-Islands match. The fast Ajax player was on the squad, but didn’t get to substitute as Serbia won 3-1.
With Jong Oranje, Daley Blind defeated Jong Luxemburg in a qualifying match. The Ajax player played the entire match and saw Genero Zeefuik (2x), Leroy Fer and Ricky van Haaren score for coach Cor Pot’s team.
