“Should have already made the play-offs’

The 2-2 result in Vienna was met with mixed feelings by Ajax. Despite a pair of away goals which will work in the team’s favor, the fact that a 0-2 lead was squandered remains a bitter pill. Frank de Boer was clearly upset afterwards. “We should never have let it get this far.”

“After Rapid’s good start, we took over the reins”, evaluated De Boer after his 40th European match as Ajax’s coach. “It was great that we scored on our first chance. After that we just went through the nice motions of creating more opportunities. I think Rapid should count itself lucky that the score at halftime was only 0-2 and not 0-4.”

‘Seemed as though we were playing with one man down’

“During halftime, I said that we needed to continue in the same rhythm. But we fell on our face at the start of the second half. And although there wasn’t much to worry about at first, we still didn’t manage to hang on to that lead. After Rapid went down to ten men, it seemed as though we were playing with one man down, too. We weren’t in the game at all. It’s such a shame that the match ended at 2-2. I feel that we should already have been through to the next round.” Still, it wasn’t all due to Ajax’s poor play in the second half. “I need to compliment Rapid on the way in which they fought their way back into the match with good football. But we should never have let it get that far.”

Klaassen’s goal

Davy Klaassen’s opening goal brought many fans back to 1995. In more or less the same fashion, Patrick Kluivert had decided that CL final. “It was great for the fans that the goal brought back memories. I didn’t really think about it, myself. I just checked if the ball had gone into the goal. It was a nice attack from right to left with good possession in front of the goal. That was the most important thing for me.”

Ajax favourite

“Are we the favourites for next week Tuesday’s game? Of course, after the 2-2, we have a stronger starting position than Rapid. If its 0-0 or 1-1, we will go through. But this result doesn’t offer any security. We will have to see in the ArenA. Rapid showed us tonight that they are a very good opponent.”
