‘Proud to be the fifth Dane’

Christian Poulsen (32) signed a two year contract with Ajax on Tuesday evening. Together with Nicolai Boilesen, Christian Eriksen, Viktor Fischer and Lasse Schone, Ajax now has contracts with no fewer than five Danes. Poulsen: “I’m looking forward to playing here.”

Six months after the Ajax iMagazine published a story about Ajax and Denmark, Christian Poulsen has signed a two year contract with Ajax. The 32 year old midfielder is the 22nd Dane to be employed by the Amsterdam club. It seems that the Danish invasion is unstoppable, especially when looking at a list of all the Danes who have ever played for Ajax. The count stood at 20 in April, and it’s now at 22. “Everyone in Denmark knows Ajax and knows what a big club it is”, says Poulsen after signing. “I’m looking forward to being part of the club. Ajax has a great history, and with big names like Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars, the club lives and breathes football.”

The list of 21 Danes who have a present or a past with Ajax went, as of last Tuesday, from Tom Søndergaard tot Lasse Schöne. He can now pass the baton to his countryman Poulsen. “I’m proud to be the fifth Dane in the selection. Not only for myself, but for all of the Danish players who are doing well with Ajax. I’ve already spoken with Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Boilesen. I already knew them from the Danish national team.”

The 92 time international has built up his football career as an experienced midfielder in six different countries. His football journey has led him to Juventus, Liverpool and FC Kopenhagen, among others. Poulsen thinks Amsterdam will be a good place to live. It already feels like home to him. “When I was still playing in Germany, at Schalke 04, I sometimes came to Amsterdam when I had a day off. It reminds me of Copenhagen. The relaxed, nice way of life.”
The midfielder comes transfer free from Evian Thonon Gaillard FC, and will play with jersey number 5, focussing on the controlling midfielder position.
