Ajax and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the direct transfer of Andre Onana. On January 3rd of this year, Ajax announced that the keeper would join as of July 1, 2015. Today, the talent signed a contract which is effective immediately until June 30, 2018. The contract with his current club, FC Barcelona, had been effective until June 30, 2015.
Onana was born on April 2, 1996 in Nkol Ngok (Cameroon). He’s played in FC Barcelona’s youth academy since 2010. This season, Onana played for FC Barcelona’s Under 19 team.
“I’m very happy to make the move to Ajax”, said Onana after signing his contract. “Several clubs were interested but I didn’t need long to make up my mind. When Ajax showed interest, it was clear for me that this was the club I wanted to join. The football philosophy appeals to me very much and the fact that the youth players get a chance with Ajax was another key attraction. I can’t wait to start.”
Ajax’s football affairs director Marc Overmars was also pleased with the newly acquired keeper: “Andre is a very talented keeper who, in the future, will strive to be Jasper Cillessen’s successor. Together with our current keeper talents, he can be a competitor for that position. Because of the many injuries plaguing us right now, it’s perfect that he can transfer right away.”
