Nikos Machlas finishes season with Sevilla

Nikos Machlas will play for Sevilla for the rest of the season. The Greek striker is hired out by Ajax to the current number 14 in Spain. He still has a contract with Ajax to the summer of 2004. Sevilla have an option to buy Machlas when the hiring period ends. Machlas did not play any official matches for Ajax this season.

Nikos Machlas came to Amsterdam from Vitesse in the summer of 1999. He made his debut for Ajax in the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield against Feyenoord and made his first goal for Ajax in the opening match of the 1999-2000 competition against SC Heerenveen.

Machlas played in 74 league matches for Ajax, scoring 38 times. He made 44 goals in 93 official matches. Including friendlies, Machlas played 125 times for Ajax and scored 63 goals.

Nikos Machlas won the double with Ajax in 2002. The Cup Final against FC Utrecht, on May 12 2002, was his last official game in the Ajax strip. He only played in 9 friendly matches this season. He scored 3 times in those nine games.

Before he came to Ajax, Machlas played for OFI Crete from 1990 to 1996 and for Vitesse from 1996 to 1999. With the Greek side he played in 154 league games, contributing 49 goals. Machlas played 92 league matches for Vitesse, in which he scored 60 times. His best season was 1997-1998, when he was Europe's top goal scorer with 34 goals.

Nikos Machlas has earned 60 caps for Greece. In the national team shirt he scored 17 goals.
