Uruguay will be the Dutch team’s World Cup semi final opponent. Luis Suarez and Nicolas Lodeiro’s team defeated Ghana on penalty kicks on Friday night, after a 1-1 score in regular time. Right before the end of the match, Suarez got a red card due to hands at the goal line. He’ll therefore miss the match against the Netherlands.
A few hours after the Netherlands beat Brazil (2-1) to move on to the semi finals. Uruguay faced Ghana in Johannesburg, to decide which team would be the Dutch team’s next opponent.
Uruguay, with Luis Suarez on the squad, went down during the first half’s extra time. A long range shot from Ghana’s Muntari was too powerful for keeper Muslera: 0-1.
But the deficit was short lived. Diego Forlan tied up the game in the 55th minute for Suarez and Lodeiro’s team, with Lodeiro coming in midway. Of the Ajax duo, Suarez had the most opportunities to bring his team ahead, but Ajax’s captain and top scorer lacked either luck or finesse each time. His World Cup goal total remained at three.
Due to the 1-1 score, both teams had to work half hour overtime after the ninety minutes were up. But Uruguay and Ghana stayed even during overtime. During the closing minutes, the African team had the ultimate chance to decide the match. First, there were two shots on goal, and Suarez blocked the second shot at the goal line with his hand, earning the Ajax player a red card and a penalty kick against. To Suarez and Uruguay’s relief, Ghana couldn’t make good on this golden opportunity. Asamoah Gyan sent the ball over the goal via the crossbar.
Ghana’s missed shot meant that the game was decided at the penalty kick spot. In the series of ensuing penalty kicks, Uruguay was the better team. With a score of 4 against 2, the South Americans were definitely better at the penalty kicks.
The semi final between the Netherlands and Uruguay will take place in Cape Town at 8.30 p.m. Suarez will not play due to his red card.
