Technical director Leo Beenhakker and Ajax's coach Ronald Koeman have demoted Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam to Ajax's second team for the remainder of the season. Beenhakker and Koeman reached this decision because of statements by Mido to several media after Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match against Arsenal FC.
Ronald Koeman had also removed the Egyptian striker from the squad on February 20 for disciplinary reasons. After a meeting with Mido, with part of the team also in attendance, Koeman brought Mido back. Against Arsenal, Mido replaced Zlatan Ibrahimovic seven minutes before the end.
Leo Beenhakker has de-activated Mido provisionally. Mido returns to Egypt for a week with Ajax's consent.
Mido came to Ajax from Belgian club KAA Gent in the summer of 2001. He has played 57 official matches for Ajax and scored 23 goals. Mido has scored 9 times in 16 league matches this season, which makes him Ajax's leading goalscorer.
