Jelle van Damme joins Southampton

Ajax and Southampton have reached agreement about the transfer of Jelle van Damme. The Belgian defender has reached a personal agreement with the Premier League club. The contract runs from 1 July 2004.

Jelle van Damme comes from Belgian club Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen, with which Ajax have a technical collaboration. After a trial period early in 2002, Van Damme signed a contract with Ajax in May of that year. The defender made his debut in the league match against Sparta (4-0 to Ajax) on 14 April 2002. Van Damme won two league titles (2002 and 2004), the Amstel Cup (2002) and the Johan Cruijff Shield (2002).

Van Damme saw action in 33 official matches for Ajax. He has played seven matches with the national team of Belgium.

As usual, Ajax do not disclose financial details of the agreement.
