Ajax and Jairo Riedewald have reached an agreement for the extension of his contract, which had been valid until June 30, 2018. The new and improved agreement is retroactively effective per March 1, 2015, until June 30, 2019.
Riedewald was born on September 9, 1996, in Haarlem. The left-footed defender has played in Ajax’s academy since 2007. On December 19, 2013, he made his debut in the first team during the Ijsselmeervogels – Ajax (0-3) cup match. To date, Riedewald has played in 31 official matches in Ajax’s first team.
“It shows faith that I can extend my contract now”, says 18 year-old Riedewald. “I’ve played many matches recently, I’ve been with the selection a lot. I want to continue. I just want to keep doing my thing and show what I can do.”
Marc Overmars is clear about the contract extension. “Jairo has moved up the ladder”, says the football affairs director. “He’s a physically strong guy, who can play great football. He’s just doing very well, and we have full confidence that he’ll succeed at Ajax.”
Riedewald is reminded often of his competition debut with Ajax 1. At the end of 2013, he secured the winter championship for Ajax during the away game at Roda JC. With two goals in the last five minutes, he turned a 1-0 deficit into a 1-2 win. “People still talk about that”, says Riedewald. “But I hope that people will remember me in a few years for different matches and goals.”
