The Dutch national team defeated Moldavia 1-0 on Friday evening, posting their third straight win in the European Cup 2012 qualifications. Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the winning goal in Chisinau.
Maarten Stekelenburg and Gregory van der Wiel were in action for the entire match in Moldavia. Before 10.500 spectators, the World Cup runner up was, as expected, better than their opponents, but still only managed to score once. In the first half, it was Klaas Jan Huntelaar, on a pass from Rafael van der Vaart, who decided the match. More opportunities followed, among which for Van der Wiel, but the 1-0 half time score didn’t change. Urby Emanuelson came in during the closing minutes. Demy de Zeeuw watched the match from the stands, with Stijn Schaars and Piet Velthuizen. The Dutch team play another European Cup group E qualification match. They will host Sweden, also unbeaten, in the Amsterdam ArenA.
Toby Alderweireld did well with Belgium. The Red Devils, who started the match with no points, needed to win in Kazachstan in order to stay alive for EURO 2012. The Belgians came through with a 2-0 win away. Alderweireld played the entire match. Remarkably, Jan Vertonghen didn’t see any action in the Astana Arena, marking the first time in a very long time that the Ajax player didn’t get any playing time with his national team. Belgium meets Austria on Tuesday.
With Denmark, Christian Eriksen lost to Portugal. In FC Porto’s Estádio do Dragão, the Danes went under, 3-0. Eriksen saw action in the last half hour, coming in for Daniel Jensen in the 58th minute. Former Ajax player Dennis Rommendahl played the whole match, which was under Dutch referee Eric Braamhaar’s charge. Denmark meets Cyprus at home on Tuesday.
In Indonesia, Ajax captain Luis Suarez easily won a practice match with Uruguay. The World Cup’s number four team defeated Indonesia 7-1. Just before the break, Suarez brought his team to a 1-2 lead, erasing an earlier deficit. Suarez was sure footed during the second half too. He made it 1-3 in the 55th minute, and, fifteen minutes later, made good from the penalty shot point: 1-5. The match ended with a 1-7 score. Uruguay ends its Asia trip on Tuesday with a practice interland against China.
