Ajax player Johnny Heitinga scored his first goal for Holland in the friendly match against Greece on Wednesday. Holland won 4-0. Heitinga and Rafael van der Vaart were in the starting line-up, Wesley Sneijder came on after halftime. Elsewhere, Bogdan Lobont's Romania defeated Germany, Holland's first opponent in Euro 2004, by no less than 5-1.
In the first half Holland, playing in a new system with four midfielders in a diamond, were not yet able to express the surplus in quality in goals. But soon in the second half, Roy Makaay scored from a cross by Boudewijn Zenden.
Zenden himself made it 2-0 and then it was Johnny Heitinga, right-back in the first half and centre-half in the second, who scored his first goal for the national team. He headed in a free kick from his Ajax teammate Rafael van der Vaart. Supersub Pierre van Hooijdonk made it 4-0 a few minutes before the end.
The Czech Republic, one of Holland's opponents in Portugal, lost a test match to Japan in Prague: 0-1. Tomás Galásek played the entire match, Zdenek Grygera was unable to play due to a back injury.
Romania, with Bogdan Lobont on goal, humiliated Germany, the team that Holland play first in Euro 2004. By halftime Romania already were up 4-0 and after 90 minutes it was 5-1.
Belgium, with Wesley Sonck as a starter and Jelle van Damme a second-half substitute, lost at home to Turkey: 2-3. Sonck, who was taken off after 66 minutes, scored the first goal.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic started for Sweden against Euro 2004 hosts Portugal. The Swedes won in Portugal by 2-1. Ibrahimovic was replaced by Johan Elmander in the second half.
Anthony Obodai played a friendly with Ghana against Angola. The match finished in 1-1.
