Fantastic turnout for Open Day

Even though it was searing hot, more than 47,000 people came to the traditional Open Day of Ajax. Highlight of the day was the presentation of the squad to the crowd.

From early in the morning the fans were queueing up to get on to the site of Ajax's Open Day. From 10 a.m. the supporters could play games, visit the Kids' Village or buy a new Ajax kit at one of the merchandising stands.

In the afternoon the squad was presented to the adoring crowd. First the technical and medical staff were introduced, and then each player of the team individually. For every player the fans had a different chant. The footballers were clearly enjoying themselves immensely.

There were many cheers for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Swedish striker. And for Johnny Heitinga, the product of Ajax's youth development who was injured for so long. Even more cheers for vice-captain Rafael van der Vaart, who told the supporters that he hoped Ajax would be the Dutch champions by Christmas.

The supporters had saved the most noise for captain Jari Litmanen, who is also the team's only link with the last great squad that won the Champions League in 1995. ,,We really appreciate you coming out here'', Litmanen said to the fans. ,,We hope that you'll support us as much as possible again this season. We as a team have a lot of faith that we will do well again.''

After the introduction, the fans lined up to get the autographs of all the players and coaches.
