Dominant Ajax brings excitement back with convincing win

Ajax won its top game against PSV in a very convincing manner.  The Ajacieds defeated the Eredivisie’s first placed team by 3-0 at home.  After a scoreless first half, David Neres, Lasse Schöne and Donny van de Beek brough the Amsterdam ArenA to its feet with their goals.

Thanks to this win, Ajax has brought the excitement back to the Eredivisie.  Second placed AZ is now 5 points behind PSV, and Ajax follows, 2 points further behind.  On Wednesday, the Eindhoven team will visit FC Groningen.  The day after that, Ajax will host Excelsior.

Clear mission
Coach Marcel Keizer hadn’t made any changes to his squad and went with the same 11 players as he had eight days ago against FC Twente.  His team suffered a costly loss of points in that game (3-3), and increased its deficit against PSV to 10 points.  The Amsterdam team’s assignment was crystal clear: to win.

PSV wasn’t in this position and focussed mostly on defending.  Ajax took possession often, 70 per cent in the first half, but this didn’t lead to many opportunities at first.  The Amsterdam team finally got one, just before the break.  A corner from the right side was extended and landed with Kasper Dolberg’s.  The Dane had the chance to send a header into the goal, but his shot went high instead.

Carbon Copy
The second half was a carbon copy of the first.  Ajax dominated again and was on a full-scale hunt for the opening goal.  In the 55th minute, another good opportunity presented itself.  After a measured pass from Justin Kluivert, the free Matthijs de Ligt sent a header over.

Those missed opportunities didn’t dampen Ajax’s spirit.  The team was rewarded shortly after that with the 1-0 goal.  PSV breathed a sigh of relief when a corner was rescued out of the goal, but they didn’t count on Neres.  The Brazilian took possession of the ball in one swift move and saw his shot disappear into the PSV goal: 1-0.

Ajax grows wings
This lead gave Ajax wings, as things picked up after that.  Schöne freed himself up and took a diagonal shot from the edge of the box.  The fun didn’t end there, as Van de Beek brought the score to 3-0, on an assist from Neres.

The game thus ran its course.  PSV went looking for a goal, but didn’t manage to score one, despite an opportunity for Luuk de Jong with a header and a free kick by Marco van Ginkel.
