Dolberg leads Ajax to 2nd round KNVB Cup

Dolberg leads Ajax to 2nd round KNVB Cup

Ajax has qualified for the 2nd round of the KNVB Cup tournament.  Marcel Keizer’s team defeated the amateurs from Scheveningen, 1-5.  Kasper Dolberg was outstanding in The Hague, scoring 3 goals and making 1 assist.  Siem de Jong and Ruben Koorndijk (own goal) also scored for Ajax.

The 33-time national champion meeting an amateur team from the third division: only a big win would ensure satisfaction at the end of the game.  That didn’t really happen for Ajax, although the beginning was explosive.  Dolberg opened the score in the 5th minute with an annihilating shot.  After 660 scoreless minutes for the Dane, this undoubtedly felt incredible for him.

Van Leer and Orejuela make debut, Siem de Jong returns
Ajax didn’t manage to impose itself at first.  After a quick opening goal (and a few other opportunities), Scheveningen was dangerous on a few occasions in the depressingly empty ADO Den Haag stadium.  As announced earlier, Keizer had made several changes to his team.  Siem de Jong made his return as an Ajacied, Benjamin van Leer and Luis Orejuela made their debuts, and Max Wöber was on the squad for the first time.

De Jong doubles lead before the break
It wasn’t until late in the first half that the opportunities started raining down for Ajax, and the 0-2 score appeared on the board.  Dolberg served Siem de Jong with a perfect pass from the left, and the latter pulled the trigger from nearby.  In the second half, Ajax’s lead increased thanks to an own goal by Koorndijk.  This was preceded by a nice combination from De Jong and Dolberg, after which a duel between Neres and Koorndijk ended with the ball disappearing into the goal.

Barry Rog became the hero of Scheveningen by scoring the 1-3 goal, and blemishing Van Leer’s clean sheet.  Despite the goal against, there was no excitement left in the game.  Dolberg crowned his good game with two more goals in the final minutes: a hard shot from nearby (including a attacked he initiated himself) and a penalty.

Satisfied return to Amsterdam
Ideally, Ajax would have buried Scheveningen under a sea of goals in this cup game.  That scenario didn’t happen, but, with a 1-5 win, Dolberg’s hat trick, and a ticket into the next round, Marcel Keizer can be satisfied.
