Desportivo Brasil at AEGON Future Cup

Desportivo Brasil U-17 has qualified as the eighth, and last, participant for the AEGON Future Cup. In a special qualification tournament in Brazil, host Desportivo Brasil battled with Fluminense, Palmeiras and Grêmio for a spot in the tournament at de Toekomst. In the final, Desportivo Brasil was too strong for Grêmio after penalty kicks (4-3). Fluminense placed third.

The first day of the qualification tournament saw no fewer than eighteen goals. With victories against Palmeiras (2-0), and future finalist Grêmio (5-1), Desportivo Brasil immediately showed that they meant business. The host didn’t disappoint in the final day, although a series of penalty kicks was necessary to secure the ticket to Amsterdam. After tournament top scorer Mamute (4 goals) from Grêmio had opened the score, Yan tied it up for Desportivo Brasil. In the penalty kick series, the home team just had a bit more luck than its opponent.
Considering the strong field of participants at the international youth tournament for B-juniors, the AEGON Future Cup is a nice measuring stick for Brazilian youth football. In addition to Ajax, the participants include Manchester United, Bayern München, Besiktas, FC Barcelona, Ajax Cape Town and AC Milan.
The qualification tournament in Porto Feliz (in the São Paulo area) was a nice follow up to Ajax’s visit to South America’s largest city. During Ajax’s training camp, Ajax participated in various activities for the Brazilian branch of AEGON, the head sponsor. Ajax also played a practice match against Palmeiras. Delegations from Ajax and Mongeral AEGON also visited the Desportivo Brasil complex. The club is known for its strong youth academy in Brazil. Every year, 54 young players in the 15-, 17- and -20 age categories are trained for professional football. The club’s only goal is to make players into professionals. Desportivo Brasil thus doesn’t have a first team.
The AEGON Future Cup will be held during Easter weekend (April 7,8,9) for the third time. Ajax won the first edition in 2010. Last year, Anderlecht won the event in de Toekomst.
Tickets for the international youth tournament cost 7.50 euro. The cost of an all access pass for all three tournament days costs 10 euro. Children 13years of age and under can attend the tournament all weekend, free of charge.
