Frank de Boer was especially happy on Sunday after Arek Milik’s 1-3 goal. The Ajax coach was specifically pleased about the plays preceding Milik’s second goal.
Both Davy Klaassen’s goal and Milik’s second goal were preceded by beautiful attacks. It clearly pleased Frank de Boer to see his team move so swiftly on the Fries artificial turf. “This is the reason I became a coach. This is the kind of beautiful attack you want to see.”
After a poor start, Ajax straightened itself out quickly in the Cambuur Stadium. The early 1-0 deficit was erased midway through the first half, even converted into a lead. “In the end, we gained control quickly. We weren’t threatening at the beginning, but thanks to a few good combinations we got into the game better and better. After Milik’s 1-1 we then continued to have the upper hand.”
Milik got the nod in Leeuwarden instead of Kolbeinn Sigthórsson because, according to De Boer, he could manage the artificial turf better. With two goals, the Polish forward repaid his coach’s confidence in him. Still, it’s not a foregone conclusion that Milik will be the first choice as centre forward. “I’m happy that, as a coach, I’m in the position to be able to make choices. We’ll see who will play two weeks from now against sc Heerenveen. There’s very little difference between Sitghórsson and Milik.”
De Boer feels that Ajax s on the right track: “In the last three competition matches, we’ve earned nine points. In addition to that, we’ve also gone through in the cup tournament. We can therefore go into the interland period feeling pretty good.”
