Cape Town beats Amsterdam

Ajax Cape Town defeated big brother Ajax Amsterdam in Cape Town on Sunday. Hans Vonk and Mitchell Donald both had reason to smile after the friendly, although for different reasons.

It was an unexpected result of the match between the two Ajax teams. The Dutch Ajax was supposed to be stronger than the South-African Ajax. In the first half, that was the case. Ryan Babel gave Amsterdam the lead after 15 minutes when he finished off a cross by Tom de Mul.

In the first half Amsterdam had few problems with the home side, but Henk ten Cate's team slipped badly after halftime. Wthin minutes, Ajax Cape Town went past the visitors, from 0-1 to 3-1. Granwald Scott became the hometown hero with two goals and Nathan Paulse made his team's third hardly a minute after being brought on.
,,This result looks bad'', said Ten Cate. ,,You lose prestige. Big Ajax loses to little Ajax. But we shouldn't take it too badly’’

Ten Cate also saw some good things in the second half. He praised Leonardo for his first performance in the Ajax shirt. And Ajax had another first-timer in the ranks. Mitchell Donald played his first minutes in Ajax 1. Donald was one of the few Amsterdam players with something to smile about after the match. ,,It was a great experience'', he said. ,,Especially because I had never played in front of so many spectators.'' The midfielder has played for Ajax since the E-juniors. ,,This was the gfirst time I played with my name on the back of my shirt. I am not trading this shirt with anyone, it's going to be framed.''

Goalkeeper Hans Vonk had good reason to celebrate with his teammates. ,,Nobody expected this'', said the former Amsterdam and current Cape Town goalkeeper. ,,We were the better team in the second half.’’
