The possibility exists that Palmeiras will pay a return visit to Amsterdam next spring. The São Paulo club’s U-17 team is one of the participants in the qualifying tournament of the Mongeral AEGON Future Cup. With host Desportivo Brasil, and most probably Fluminense and Gremio, the youth teams will compete on March 17 and 18 for a ticket to the AEGON Future Cup at Ajax.
A delegation from Ajax and Mongeral AEGON paid a visit to the Desportivo Brasil complex last week. The club is known for its strong youth academy in Brazil. Every year, 54 young football players in the -15, -17, and -20 age categories are trained to join professional football. The club’s only goal is for its players to become professionals. Desportivo Brasil therefore has no first team.
Palmeiras, who was Ajax’s host last week during the club’s training camp in São Paulo, is hoping to send its U-17 team to the Toekomst sports complex during Easter weekend (April 7, 8, 9). Especially considering the calibre of the other participants of the international tournament for B-juniors, this is a great opportunity for Brazilian football to measure itself. In addition to Ajax, participants include Manchester United, Bayern München, Besiktas, FC Barcelona, Ajax Cape Town and AC Milan
The qualification tournament in Brazil is a nice follow up on Ajax’s visit to South America’s biggest city. During the training camp, Ajax took part in various activities organized by the Brazilian branch of head sponsor AEGON.
The AEGON Future Cup will take place for the third time during Easter weekend. Ajax won the first edition in 2010. The year after that, Anderlecht won the international youth tournament at the Toekomst.
