Ajax Win Inaugural U23 Tournament

The Ajax Cape Town under 19 side, with a few PSL additions, played in the Mitchell's Plain Football District-Mother City U23 Soccer Tournament.

he Ajax Cape Town side under the guidance of Ian Gorowa and Cavin Johnson played a combination of the U17, U19 and the younger members of our PSL side in this tournament at the Stephen Reagon Sports complex.
Ajax was drawn in the group of death with fellow professional side Santos and Mother City.
Ian Gorowa, the Ajax Cape Town coach said, “By bringing in the “pros” the younger players will be able to learn from these players and draw on their experience of playing at the highest level. This tournament also allows the players to shift focus from a hectic Super League schedule where they played up to three games per week. In saying that, this does not mean that we will take it easy as the guys are hoping to put the disappointment of failing in the Metropolitan tournament behind them. Its business as usual and Santos will provide stiff competition in their first game. Also one cannot dismiss Mother City or Lentegeur F.C. and the possibility of an upset is on the cards in this group of death.”
The results were as follows, Ajax 1-1 Santos
Ajax 5 -0 Lentegeur F.C.
Ajax 2 -0 Mother City
Ajax Cape Town beat Dalmans Midas in the quarterfinals and Premier United in the semi-finals 1-0.
The finals took place on Sunday at 15h00 when Ajax Cape Town took on Santos in a hotly contested final.
Ajax took the game to Santos and they made an early break through when Romano Scott broke the deadlock with a strike off his left foot to put Ajax ahead. But Santos came back strongly and forced Yanga Gcilishe to concede a penalty. Santos failed to convert, but equalised minutes later via a well-worked free kick.
Ajax fought back and regained the lead when Romano Scott found space in the penalty box and scored his second of the game to give Ajax the lead.
After the break Santos came back strongly and scored with 2 minutes remaining when the referee adjudged an Ajax player to have handled the ball in a congested goal- mouth.
After full time the game went into extra-time with the Golden Goal rule coming into effect and half way into the first half of extra time Maahier Davids struck with a splendid volley from all of 15 yards.
Pandemonium broke out and the Ajax players and fans went into a victory celebration worthy of a Cup Final. Not only did Ajax Cape Town win the final, but Ayanda Maquasha also went on to win the Player of the Tournament Award.
