Ajax win comfortably before European clash

The way Ajax played against RBC - and especially the lack of resistance from RBC - was exactly how coach Ronald Koeman had picured it. Ajax were leading 3-0 at half time and Koeman could easily afford to take off Galasek, Pienaar and Van der Vaart. The coach was therefore happy with the 4-1 final result.

Ronald Koeman did not want to rest anybody before the confrontation with AC Milan on Tuesday. Making sure Ajax play Champions League next season has the top priority and Feyenoord were closing in fast. But Koeman did not want to take unnecessary risks with his players either. It never became a difficult choice. Chivu and Trabelsi were suspended and Zlatan Ibrahimovic turned out not to be fit enough to play. Koeman: ,,The risk of playing Zlatan was too great. Not only with Tuesday in mind, but also for the games after. But I am hopeful that he'll be ready to play on Tuesday."

Due to all the injuries and suspensions two new faces on the bench with Ajax: Davide Mendes da Silva and Jamal Akachar. The latter would see his first action with Ajax's first team.

Ajax's first goal came in the 35th minute and was made by Rafael van der Vaart. The team's captain on the night headed in a terrific cross by Maxwell. The Brazilian was the team's best player in the first half. Maxwell was rewarded with a goal. He had to wait for ages before he could make his second goal ever for Ajax, but in the 39th minute he finally had reason to cheer: 2-0.

Ajax even made it 3-0 in the first half. Andy van der Meyde combined with Galasek and finished beautifully. It effectively meant the game was over.

RBC got a goal back in the second half when Daelemans found himself all alone before 'keeper Lobont: 3-1. Koeman had already brought on a pair of substitutes. Steven Pienaar and Tomas Galasek had done their job and were replaced by Jamal Akachar, the 19-year-old former taxi driver from Amsterdam who made his debut in Ajax 1, and crowd favourite Richard Witschge.

Eventually Ajax made it 4-1. Boukhari, who had come on for Van der Vaart, scored in added time. It was his fourth goal in the Dutch league for Ajax.
