Ajax is preparing for the important Champions League match against AJ Auxerre. On match day, Ajax trained Wednesday morning in the US Joigny stadium, near Auxerre. Vurnon Anita and Demy de Zeeuw went through one last test.
At 11.15a.m., the players’ bus arrived at the Joigny local football club. The amateur club, from France’s seventh division, hosted Martin Jol’s team on Wednesday morning. Just as Real Madrid had, Ajax chose for the Stade de la Madeleine to stretch their muscles on game day. In 1996, Louis van Gaal’s Ajax had also chosen for the stadium in Joigny leading up to the match in Auxerre.
In the autumn setting, Vurnon Anita and Demy de Zeeuw did a last test before the fourth Champions League pool game. The pair successfully completed several sprints. Anita suffered a slight hamstring injury last Saturday against Heracles Almelo. De Zeeuw stayed on the side lines during that match as a precaution, due to a stress injury in his left leg. On Wednesday evening, Jol expects to have both players at his disposal, as he said on Tuesday evening’s press conference.
Prior to the short practice session, Jol received, just like José Mourinho had, a package of Chablis from the famous wine region from Joigny’s mayor. In exchange, Ajax’s coach gave the Joigny delegates a big Ajax pennant.
Ajax-Auxerre begins on Wednesday evening at 8.45p.m. in the Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps.
