Adrie Koster predicted that Heerenveen - Ajax would be a spectacular match with a lot of goals. The Ajax coach was right and he also took home the three points as Ajax won: 2-4.
It was the third time the two teams faced each other this season and the third time Ajax won. In the Abe Lenstra Stadium Ajax pulled off a 2-4 victory this time. ,,I had predicted this would be spectacular”, Koster said. ,,And I think I was right.”
Ajax began strongly, but after the first fifteen minutes the home side took over the initiative. There were chances for Danijel Pranjic and Miralem Sulejmani, but it was Ajax who took the lead. A minute before halftime, Michal Svec cleared a pass by Kenneth Perez badly. The ball came to Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who was stopped by goalkeeper Rob van Dijk. Luis Suarez struck in the rebound.
In the second half, Ajax came away lucky at a few crucial times. Sulejmani headed the ball onto the crossbar in the 50th minute and struck the post two minutes later. The equaliser seemed a matter of time, but then Jan Vertonghen was brought down in the box: penalty. Kenneth Perez converted it and gave Ajax the 0-2 lead. Not much later it was Sulejmani's turn. He headed the ball on the crossbar once more, but then struck from up close moments later to make it 1-2. Before the fans were back in their seats, it was 1-3. Straight from the kickoff, Suarez crossed to Huntelaar, who headed it in.
Being down 1-3, Heerenveen played all or nothing and had the best chances, but Ajax (with Jeffrey Sarpong on for Perez) were the most effective side and also had a great Maarten Stekelenburg on goal. In the 88th minute Huntelaar decided the match. Assisted by again Suarez, who had moved past all his defenders, he made it 1-4 with his 29th goal of the season. In added time Pranjic made it 2-4. With PSV drawing 0-0 at NEC, the gap with the league leaders is now five points. ,,All in all a good win”, Koster said. ,,We handled it well and showed character.”
Ajax play against De Graafschap in the ArenA next Sunday. Bruno Silva will be suspended for that match. He received a yellow card in the first half.
