It all went wrong for Ajax on Sunday afternoon. NAC were better and won 4-2 in Breda. The first loss in the Dutch league means that Ajax have given up the lead in the league table to PSV, who beat Feyenoord 3-1.
To coach Ronald Koeman's dismay, Ajax's defense was on very poor form. ,,NAC could have made seven goals'', Koeman complained afterwards. ,,I don't know what we were doing out there.''
NAC took an early lead when Nourdin Boukhari, on loan from Ajax, thundered the ball past goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont when Julien Escudé and Yakubu failed to clear.
Things got worse after halftime, when Elmander, on loan from Feyenoord, struck twice and put NAC up 3-0. Only then Ajax woke up and tried to do something back. Victor Sikora scored after a howler by goalkeeper Babos and Zlatan Ibrahimovic chipped it in nicely for the 3-2. But it was still the home side that had the better chances, and it was only because Lobont refused to bend that the team from Amsterdam still had an outside chance.
But in the closing minutes it was another player on loan from Ajax, Stefano Seedorf, who made sure that NAC got what it deserved: 4-2.
