Ajax still searching for top form

Through a 1-0 victory over FC Zwolle Ajax still share the lead in the Holland Casino Eredivisie. Ajax and RKC are the only two teams who have not lost any points. ,,But we were still not as good as we should be", coach Ronald Koeman said. The next match is at home against RKC with the first place in the league at stake.

FC Zwolle, still without a point, came to the ArenA to limit the damage and succeeded, where many had thought Ajax capable of their first big win.

The pressure would be off, now that the side have qualified for the UEFA Champions League. But afterwards Koeman had to admit that his side still lacks the top form.

Compared to the last three matches, the first half went fairly well. Zwolle kept ten men back and Ajax passed the ball around looking for scoring opportunities. ,,We had our chances and if we would have scored another one after the 1-0, we might have booked a big victory today'', Koeman said.

That did not happen, although the way in which Ajax scored the 1-0 was very promising. Tomás Galásek passed to Rafael van der Vaart, who back-healed it to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede headed it to Steven Pienaar who struck from the right side and put his team up after half an hour's play.

Ajax's defence was solid, although Zdenek Grygera had to be taken off with a head injury. Koeman tried everything to get his team going in the second half. He even took off his captain Van der Vaart for Wesley Sonck. But nothing worked in the second half. ,,We have to pass the ball quicker and find our wing players sooner'', said Koeman. ,,Today, we were below our top form again.''

On September 13 RKC come to Amsterdam and Ajax have to try and remain the only team in Holland that have not lost points.
