Ajax sign Angelos Charisteas

Ajax have acquired Angelos Charisteas. The Greek striker signed a contract to 30 June 2008. Ajax have also reached agreement about the transfer with the current club of Charisteas, SV Werder Bremen.

Angelos Charisteas was born on 9 February 1980. The 1.91 metre tall striker began his professional football career with FC Aris Thessaloniki after coming over from non-league side Strimonikos Serron. After a loan period at Athinaikos FC he returned to Aris and made his European debut at age 19.

In 2002, Charisteas moved to SV Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga. With that club the Greek forward achieved great success in the 2003-2004 season. Werder captured the league title and the national cup in that season.

Charisteas won the European championship with Greece at Euro 2004 in Portugal during the summer. The striker scored three goals in six tournament matches, including the winning goal in the final against Portugal. Charisteas has earned 38 caps for Greece, scoring 13 goals in those matches.

The Greek striker is happy with his move to Ajax. ,,Ajax is another step up in my career. They are a European top club and I want to win as many trophies as possible in the next three and a half years. I have spoken with Yannis Anastasiou and with Petri Pasanen, who now plays for Werder Bremen. Both said that Ajax is a fantastic club to play for", said Charisteas. After the winter break, it will be determined with which shirt number Charisteas will play.
