Ajax pass first test

Ajax played their first friendly match of the new season against the amateurs of DWV. Martin Jol's team passed its first test, and earned itself a day off after winning 10-1.

Jol, in his first match as coach of Ajax, had set a goal for his men: Ajax had to win by 6-0, or, if a goal was conceded, by at least 9-1. Then the players would get the Sunday off. ,,I did not think we would make it'', said Jol. ,,With the warm weather and us being up only 2-1 at halftime.''

But the players surprised Jol, who still missed seven internationals (they join the team on Monday)and also had to play without the recovering Jan Vertonghen, Rasmus Lindgren and Kenneth Vermeer.

Ismaïl Aissati, one of the better players on the afternoon, made it 0-1 after seven minutes. Marvin Zeegelaar doubled the margin in the 22nd minute. DWV scored through captain Henk Abercrombie, and it remained 1-2 for the rest of the first half.

Mitchell Donald played the first half hour of the second half. The midfielder had been sidelined for almost a year with a torn ACL. Donald was pleased: ,,I'm doing well. This is my first match in ten months. It's great that I also got to score a goal. I could not play for more than half an hour, because I have been out for so long.”

Donald showed Ajax the way to a day off by making it 1-3 after 48 minutes. Goals by Martina, Sno, Bodul, Aissati, De Jong (2) and again Martina followed. After De Jong's second goal (1-9), the players erupted; the team had earned the free Sunday.

Ajax play their next friendly next Saturday, when they host Ajax Cape Town on De Toekomst.
