Ajax out of Dutch Cup

NAC Breda did what they did in the 2003-2004-season: eliminate Ajax in the national Cup. NAC defeated Ajax by 4-2 in Breda on Wednesday.

Earlier this season, NAC also defeated Ajax, back then in the league: On 2 December 2007 the guests left the ArenA with a 1-3-win.

In retrospect, not much could be diminished of the Cup win by NAC. The home team struck at the right times.
,,This was a very difficult evening for us’’, coach Adrie Koster said. ,,After we got trumped in the league match, NAC also beat us in the Cup. The opponent was more aggressive than we were. We hit the post, but right after that, we let them beat us easily. Really disappointing.’’

Koster seemed to have found the right tactic in the second half, after Kurt Elshot had put NAC Breda up 1-0 with a shot from distance. Ajax made some changes in the second half and they gave Ajax more grip on the Cup match.

Mitchell Donald had started. Edgar Davids began on Sunday against AZ, but the veteran was left out of the squad as a precaution this time. Leonardo also stayed behind in Amsterdam. Koster: ,,Leo said this morning that his knee was stiff. We are not taking any risks with him.''

Luis Suarez brought the visitors alongside twenty minutes after the interval: 1-1. ,,It looked like we had NAC at the throat'', Koster said.

But one Breda attack later and Ajax were looking at a deficit again. Substitute Ahmed Ammi benefitted from the lacklustre way of defending: 2-1. ,,That shouldn't happen, but it did'’, said Koster. Patrick Zwaanswijk (header) and Anthony Lurling (individual move) made it even worse. A second goal by Suarez was nice to look at, but it didn't help Ajax much.
