The home match against FC Twente lasted just a little too long for Ajax. The home side, playing a good match, allowed a goal by Blaise N’Kufo in added time: 2-2. ,,A big damper”, coach Adrie Koster said.
Added time and a 2-1 lead. It could not go wrong for Ajax anymore. The fourth official had indicated that the match would last three more minutes, and that was 90 seconds ago. Ajax had to hold on for a little more than a minute. FC Twente began their last attack. The ball came to Arnautovic, who passed to N’Kufo. The Swiss forward found himself wide open and fired the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg: 2-2.
Ajax had only one point to show for a terrific performance, and the team was very disappointed. ,,We gave away two points'', said Koster. ,,And we should not have, not if we want to compete for the title. Then you have to remain concentrated to the very end, and we weren't. You know Twente are going to play all or nothing. We should have covered Arnautovic, so he could not pass the ball to N’Kufo.”
Luckily for Ajax and the 50,000 fans, the home side played a lot better than in the past few matches. The first chance was for Twente, but after that Ajax dominated. The defence did its job and the forwards created chances. Just when Twente showed some signs of life, Ajax took the lead. Siem de Jong touched the ball to Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who scored his fourteenth goal of the season: 1-0.
In the second half Ajax created some more chances, but this time Twente scored. After a scrimmage the ball fell between the defence and Stekelenburg. Substitute Stein Huysegems was the first to react and he scored.
Ajax recovered and regained the lead through a deflected free kick by again Huntelaar. For what turned out to be almost the remainder of the match, Ajax kept the defence closed and had some chances to make it 3-1. But N’Kufo's goal seconds before the final whistle made that the fans went home disappointed despite the good game they had seen. ,,We played for the win the whole match'', said Koster. ,,It's a shame we did not get the three points. That has to happen Sunday when we play in Venlo.''
