Ajax, Koeman, De Jong honoured by city of Amsterdam

Ajax 1, Ronald Koeman and Nigel de Jong were given an award by the city of Amsterdam on Monday for their achievement in sports in the year 2002.

Ajax, who won the league championship and the cup and qualified for the second round of the Champions League in 2002, were voted team of the year. Ronald Koeman was chosen as coach of the year and Nigel de Jong, who made his debut in Ajax 1 at age 17, was picked as the best young talent of 2002.

Angulo out for at least a month
Miguel Angel Angulo, midfielder with Ajax’s Champions League opponent Valencia, will be out of action with a knee injury for more than a month. Angulo underwent a knee operation on Monday, following Valencia’s home match against Villareal (2-0) on Saturday, in which he was injured. Angulo scored the equaliser in the European match against Ajax (1-1) three weeks ago.

Van Damme called up
Belgian national coach Marc van Geersom has selected Ajax player Jelle van Damme to play a friendly with the Belgian national team under 20 against Westerlo on January 14th.

Chivu, Trabelsi won’t play with World Team
Ajax players Cristian Chivu and Hatem Trabelsi have cancelled their participation in a friendly match against Real Madrid for the Spanish club’s centenary. The two defenders were selected to play with a World Team in the Spanish capital.

Chivu had to be replaced after only seven in the match against PSV last Sunday, when he suffered a recurring thigh injury. Trabelsi is still bothered by a hamstring injury.
