Ajax head into winter break with defeat

Ajax finished the first half of the season with a loss at Heerenveen. The home team won on cold and snowy pitch by 4-2. Klaas Jan Huntelaar, the striker who joins Ajax in the new year, scored once and set up another goal.

'KJH' personally contributed to his new club's deficit. With a good header he gave sc Heerenveen a 2-0 lead shortly before halftime.

Huntelaar's goal was preceeded by a goal by his fellow striker Georgios Samaras. The Greek forward also scored the 4-0.

,,Heerenveen dealt better with the circumstances'', said coach Danny Blind. ,,Set pieces are a weapon of theirs and yet we bought it. Heerenveen had the better team to play under these circumstances tonight.''

Substitute André Hanssen made it 3-0 and Samaras 4-0 hadden. Then Ajax fought back, scoring through Thomas Vermaelen (from a free kick by Wesley Sneijder) and from a penalty kick by Tomás Galásek after Angelos Charisteas was brought down.

,,But it was a pity that the match had to be played under these wintery circumstances'', the winning coach Verbeek said. ,,Normally these two teams provide a nice show for the fans, but that wasn't possible today. We were a bit luckier than Ajax.''
