Ajax will visit Brazil for one week during the winter break. Frank de Boer’s team leaves on January 7 for Sao Paulo and returns to Amsterdam on January 15. During their stay in Brazil, Ajax will play a practice match against Palmeiras on January 14.
Ajax will stay at a training camp located in the metropolis of Sao Paulo in the south east of Brazil. This is the largest city in South America, with an estimated 17 to 20 inhabitants.
The match against Palmeiras will take place at 8p.m. Dutch time (5p.m. local time) on January 14 in the Estádio Palestra Itália. This is the home base of the Brazilian competition’s number 12 team, and seats roughly 30.000 spectators.
Palmeiras was founded in 1914 with the name Palestra Italia. The club’s name changed to Palmeiras in 1942. Ajax’s practice opponent is coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari. The last time the club was Brazil’s national champion was in 1994.
A week after returning to Amsterdam, Ajax resumes competition play in Alkmaar against AZ. One day before leaving for Brazil, Ajax plays against Almere City FC on January 6 (2.30p.m.). Admission to this match at de Toekomst is free of charge.
