Ajax 'forget' finishing touch

Ajax lost two costly points in the Gelredome stadium, but have gained a promising player since the match against Vitesse. Bruno Silva Barone is an Ajax player since Sunday. Ajax began the Week of Truth with a draw: 2-2.

The Uruguyan right back made his official debut for Ajax in Arnhem. With only a handful of training sessions under his belt, Silva made a very decent first impression. The defender who had come over from FC Groningen showed an indominatble spirit for 90 minutes. He did not back away from hard challenges and at times showed his football skills.

Striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar missed a cross by Silva by a few inches after fifteen minutes, or he would have headed in the ball. ,,Bruno began well, but he faded somewhat in the second half’’, Adrie Koster said. ,,I think it had something to do with his conditioning. But all in all I am not unhappy about Silva.’’

Ajax showed resilliance by coming back from a 1-0 deficit. Forward Mads Junker had lobbed the ball over Maarten Stekelenburg early in the game. ,,You know you're in for a difficult afternoon when you play at Vitesse’’, Koster said. ,,But especially in the first half we had them under control. Vitesse had onl two chances, and we gave up the first goal by losing the ball.''

In the first five minutes of the first half, Ajax appeared to change the tidce for good. With Thomas Vermaelen on for Jan Vertonghen (,,Jan did not look good in transition’’, Koster explained) Ajax were more stable. With two goals as the result. A minute after the break, Urby Emanuelson comined with Kenneth Perez and scored: 1-1. Then Huntelaar and Luis Suarez came through, with Suarez finishing the lightning-quick attack (1-2). Koster: ,,We moved the ball well at that stage. We should have made it 1-3 or 1-4. Unfortunately, Vitesse levelled after another bad transition from us.’’ Harrie Gommans scored.

Ajax were shaken up and the final pass was lacking in most of the attacks. ,,We did not get to the finishing touch. If we could ever have defeated Vitesse in Arnhem, it was today. But we waisted that chance. Now we have to defeat PSV on Wednesday’’, said Koster.

In the Week of Truth, Ajax host PSV on Wednesday and Feyenoord on Sunday.
