Ajax’s eSport players, Koen Weijland and Dani Hagebeuk, have extended their contracts for one more season, per September 21. They will represent Ajax eSports nationally and internationally for the upcoming season.
Koen Weijland looks back: “Last season was amazing, with the win of an international club tournament in Italy and reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup for clubs. Last year in September, we were the first club in The Netherlands to embrace eSports and since then, it’s grown exponentially, both here and abroad. All of the pieces are in place for us to battle the top players of the world in FIFA 18.”
Menno Geelen, Ajax’s Commercial Director, is positive: “We’re very pleased with Koen and Dani’s performances. We’re not only proud of their achievements, but also of the way in which they conduct themselves with the young fans and in the activities that we organize. Last year, we started eSports as a new area within Ajax, and we want to expand that even more this year. We’re proud of the fact that EA uses us, with PSG, as an example, because they feel that we are global pioneers in eSports. Koen and Dani have played an important part in that, and this is why we would like to continue with them.”
Dani is positive about the first six months, too. “Representing Ajax in the eDivision and international tournaments is amazing. I’m proud of our achievements in the past year, in which I reached the final 16 in the World Cup, won the Dutch championship, and won several international tournaments, like the Ziggo eBattle: The Ultimate Clash, which we organized with Ziggo in our own ArenA. I need to continue to develop and my goal is to maintain my place in the global top and extend my title in the eDivisie.”
