Ajax extend Yakubu's contract with one year

Ajax have extended the contract of Abubakari Yakubu with one year. The improved contract runs to July 2006. As usual, Ajax do not disclose financial details of the agreement.

Yakubu comes from FC Ghapoha in Ghana and signed his first contract for Ajax in 1999. The Ghanese defender made his debut in Ajax's first team against FC Den Bosch (1-1) on 19 April 2000. Yakubu has played 58 league matches for Ajax. He has also played 3 matches in the Amstel Cup, 5 in the UEFA Cup and 12 in the UEFA Champions League.

Before the 21-year old Yakubu made the step to Ajax 1, he played for the A-juniors and Ajax 2. Yakubu played 42 matches for Ajax 2 in which he scored 5 times.

Yakubu has played 3 matches for the national team of Ghana. He made his debut for his country on 9 September 2002 in a qualifying match for the African Nations Cup against Uganda (1-0 loss).
