Ajax draws Steaua Bucharest

Ajax was matched to Steaua Bucharest in the UEFA Europa League in Nyon on Thursday. Ajax will play at home on February 14, and one week later, a match in Bucharest in scheduled. Ajax has never played against Steaua Bucharest.

Steaua is having an outstanding season to date. In the Europa League group phase, the team ended up at the winner, ahead of VfB Stuttgart, FC Copenhagen en Molde FK. At home, Steaua is the league leader, ten points ahead of the second placed team.
Last season, Ajax was eliminated in the round of thirty-two of the UEFA Europa League. After a 0-2 loss at home to Manchester United, the subsequent 1-2 away win wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the round of sixteen.
Should Ajax have the better results on February 21, after the double header against Steaua Bucharest, then the club will play the winner of Sparta Prague / Chelsea on March 7 and 14. Again, Ajax would play at home first.
The finals take place in the Amsterdam ArenA on May 1, 2013. The ambassador of the finals is former Ajax player Patrick Kluivert, who attended the draw.
