Ajax draw Internazionale, Lyon, Rosenborg

The draw for the Champions League first round in Monaco saw Ajax matched with Internazionale (Italy), Olympique Lyonnais (France) and Rosenborg (Norway). Ajax will start their series of six top European matches in the Amsterdam Arena against Lyon on September 17.

In its long history, Ajax played only one match against the French team. On April 5 1977 Ajax drew with Lyon 2-2 in a match in Dijon.

On May 31 1972 Ajax won its second European Cup by beating Inter 2-0. Johan Cruijff scored both goals for the team that included Ajax’s current assistant coach Ruud Krol. Aron Winter played 76 league matches for Internazionale from Milan, in which he scored one goal.

Ajax has never played against the third opponent, Rosenborg, but the Norwegian team is not unknown to the Amsterdam squad. Ajax-defender Andre Bergdølmo played for Rosenborg for four seasons. With the Norwegian champions he played no less than 29 matches in the Champions League.
