Ajax ‘doomed’ to the UEFA Cup

The season's end, called the playoffs, has brought Ajax nothing more than a place in the UEFA Cup. In the decisive return matc against FC Twente, Adrie Koster's team got no further than 0-0.

With that result, the Amsterdammers had to leave the ticket for the preliminary round of the Champions League to FC Twente. The loss at Twente last week (2-1) could not be erased in Amsterdam. Ajax will play in the UEFA Cup in the 2008-2009 season.

The smallest of victories (1-0) was have been enough for Ajax. Luis Suarez, Gabri, Kenneth Perez and Klaas Jan Huntelaar had good opportunities. But a lack of luck and a great Twente goalkeeper Sander Boschker kept Ajax from scoring. Former Ajax player Youssouf Hersi had the best chances for Twente.

,,The luckiest team went through after two matches'', Adrie Koster said. ,,We had the chances today. But when you get them, you have to finish them. We didn't. Ajax are now doomed to play UEFA Cup.’’

The home side put Twente under pressure in the first half. Edgar Davids played an important role as midfielder and Rasmus Lindgren was excellent as a central defender. The Swede normally plays in midfield, but Ajax had many problems in the back line.

Donovan Slijngard made his debut for Ajax as left wing back, due to injuries of Thomas Vermaelen, Urby Emanuelson and Gregory van der Wiel and a suspension for Jan Vertonghen. Slijngard did well in his first match, but the disappointing result took away the lustre.

Where Slijngard played his first match for Ajax 1, sub Ismael Urzaiz played his last. He could not help Ajax to a late goal. Crowd favourite John Heitinga also played his final match for the club, while Edgar Davids' future is uncertain.

,,Now we finished in second place, but in the end we have nothing’’, Koster said. ,,We just missed the title and we haven't qualified for the preliminary round of the Champions League. For now, no chance to measure us against the big clubs. We did all we could this season, but we didn't succees and that is disappointing.’’
