Ajax dominate in Classic
Ajax reigned supreme in the ArenA on Sunday in the match against rivals Feyenoord (2-0). Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg had next to nothing to do, whilst the home team created many chances.
Ajax did goos business in more ways than one with the 2-0 win in the sold-out Amsterdam ArenA. After a series of disappointing results, Marco van Basten's team finally won the three points. ,,It was especially important for us to win this one after that series’’, the Ajax boss said. ,,The match against Feyenoord is of course very important in Amsterdam. After a turbulent week, I am glad that we defeated Feyenoord. This gives us confidence for the upcoming games.’’
The Classic was close until added time. That was mainly due to the home side, who had many chances after Thomas Vermaelen's goal in the 52nd minute, but did not score until Urby Emanuelson ended all doubts in the 91st minute.
,,It was not spectacular, but we were not so vulnerable today either’’, Van Basten said about the fine defensive job by his team. ,,At this stage, that is also important.’’ The Ajax coach included Kennedy and Oleguer in his lineup. Oleguer formed a good couple with Robbie Wielaert as central defenders. Kennedy played an offensively soid match. The Swede played a big part in the first goal. Thomas Vermaelenscoredd from up close from his free kick.
After the first goal, Ajax looked to decide the match quickly. Crossbar and post kept Luis Suarez, Urby Emanuelson and substitute Vurnon Anita from scoring.
Ajax were much stronger than Feyenoord, who created next to nothing for themselves. But because Ajax did not score a quick second goal, the visitors kept hanging on long.
Anita came on for Gabri in the 43rd minute. The Spanish midfielder began well, but had to come out after being hit in the head. a quick check showed he had a mild concussion. Anita replaced him well. Leonardo was also a valuable substitute. The Brazilian came on for Micky Sulejmani, who was sick, after halftime. Leonardo received praise of his coach. ,,If Leo keeps performing like this, we really want to keep him.’’ Leonardo was voted Ajax player of the match, something that rarely happens to substitutes.
Ajax gained two points on leaders AZ, who drew with PSV on Saturday (2-2).
