Ajax close off preseason and Open Day with victory

Ajax closed off the preseason and the annual Open Day with a small win against Haarlem, 2-1. With that result, Ajax are undefeated in the preseason.

Coach Ronald Koeman could at last play striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had to miss the Amsterdam Tournament with a groin injury. Unfortunately, Wesley Sonck had a light thigh injury, so Koeman could still not field his two strikers at the same time, as a preparation for the preliminary CL match against (most likely) Grazer AK. In a hot, filled with 25,000 fans, Arena Ajax took the lead when Ibrahimovic zig-zagged past four players and shot the ball high in the goal.

Koeman substituted almost his entire team and saw Haarlem levelling the score shortly after halftime. Wamberto, captain in the second half after Jari Litmanen had been taken off and Rafael van der Vaart was unable to play with a light injury, imitated Ibrahimovic and also went by a number of players before giving Ajax the lead back: 2-1.

That was it for the day. Ajax finished the preseason and know that the first important game will come Tuesday 12 August. Most likely the opponent will be Grazer AK in the third preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League. The Austrians take a 5-1 victory into tonight's return match with Albanian side Tirana.
