Ajax build up rhythm

Ajax started the preseason campaign with a 4-0 win against amateur side VVSB in Noordwijkerhout. Coach Henk ten Cate concluded that the framework of his team is in place.

,,The outline of the team is in place'', Henk ten Cate said after Ajax's first friendly. The result and the way of playing were of lesser concern this time. ,,I did not give my players any assignments. This was just to build up our rhythm. We trained earlier in the day. After the friendlies against the professional teams, we'll get a better picture.''

It was clear that Ajax are well set at the back and that there are some vacancies up front, the result of losing forwards Babel, De Mul and Perez. ,,We're working on that'', Ten Cate said. One of the new players immediately proved his worth. Kennedy played his first 45 minutes for Ajax and scored his team's first two goals. Intern Thembinkosi 'Terror' Fanteni made it 0-3 in the first half.

After halftime Wesley Sneijder and Klaas Jan Huntelaar replaced Kennedy and Fanteni. They both showed their offensive intentions, but were held scoreless this time. When Jan Vertonghen had to be taken off with an ankle injury, the match lost much of its lustre. It was feared that Vertonghen had broken his ankle, but it turned out he 'only' damaged the ligemants in his ankle. He will be out for around four weeks. Afte the Belgian went off, the remainder of the match went in a too low pace. Only Nicolae Mitea, back on to replace Vertonghen, added a goal, in the last minute.
