Ajax and Steven Pienaar reach agreement

Ajax have reached an agreement with Steven Pienaar about an improved reward of his current contract. The contract between Ajax and Steven Pienaar runs to the summer of 2006.

In Pienaar's contract was an agreement that a certain number of matches played in the first team would cause his salary to be improved.

Steven Pienaar made his debut for Ajax's first team in the away match against NAC (Ajax won 1-0) on February 24, 2002. The South-African Talent of the Year 2000 won the Dutch Cup with Ajax and the national titles with both the first and second team of the club from Amsterdam.

Steven Pienaar comes from Ajax's alliance club Ajax Cape Town. On May 23 2002, he earned his first cap for Bafana Bafana, the national team of South-Africa.

Pienaar scored three times in 23 league matches for Ajax. He has also played in 8 UEFA Champions League matches (with a goal away to Olympique Lyonnais) and 3 Amstel Cup matches.

,,I am glad it is oer with'', Pienaar reacted to the good news. ,,Everybody was talking about my contract lately, now only the football is important again. It did not bother me that much, by the way. I think I played well in the past matches.''

Maybe those good games have accelerated the negotiations? ,,When you play well, it probably helps'', the South-African midfielder thought. ,,I am happy now, but I am always happy.''
