Ajax and Richard Witschge part company

Technical director Leo Beenhakker and coach Ronald Koeman of Ajax have informed Richard Witschge that there will be no room for the midfielder in next year's squad. The contract between Ajax and Richard Witschge runs out on June 30 of this year.

Richard Witschge was hired out to Spanish side Alavés by Ajax in the 2001-2002 season. Ajax's coach Ronald Koeman brought Witschge back in the squad this season. Until now, Witschge has appeared in 16 matches in the Dutch Holland Casino Eredivisie, 1 Amstel Cup match and 7 UEFA Champions League matches for Ajax. Witschge scored his only goal so far this season in the home match against FC Zwolle.

Richard Witschge played from October 26 1986 (AZ – Ajax 1-6) 279 official matches for Ajax, scoring 18 times. With Ajax, Witschge won the natonal title in 1990 and 1998 and the Cup in 1998 and 1999. He also gave Ajax a 4-3 victory over FC Barcelona with a free kick in the extra time, thus helping Ajax to winning the fourth Amsterdam Tournament in 2002.

Witschge also played for Alavés, FC Barcelona, Girondins de Bordeaux and Blackburn Rovers. He wore the shirt of the Dutch national team 31 times.
