Marcel Keizer new Ajax coach

Marcel Keizer new Ajax coach

Marcel Keizer has been appointed as the head coach of Ajax’s first team.  He will soon be signing a contract which will take effect on July 1, 2017, for two years, until June 30, 2019.  An option for an additional year has been included in the contract.

Keizer (Badhoevedorp, 15 januari 1969) was the head coach of the Ajax Reserves last season.  With the reserves team, the coach won the period title, and the team finished the season in second place of the Jupiler League.  Prior to coming to Amsterdam, he worked as the head coach of FC Emmen.  On February 13, 2016, he was appointed as the head coach for SC Cambuur Leeuwarden, where he had been the technical manager.  From 2012 to 2014, Keizer was the head coach of SC Telstar.

As a player, Keizer was active in Ajax’s youth academy, and made his debut in the first team on April 10, 1988.  He played a total of five official matches in Ajax’s first team.  Keizer went to Cambuur Leeuwarden in 1989.  Via De Graafschap and FC Emmen, he ended his playing career in 2002, after which he embarked on a coaching career.

General Manager Edwin van der Sar: “From the moment that there was a chance that we would need to find another head coach, Keizer was immediately a good candidate in the eyes of the Technical Heart.  It’s fitting for Ajax to first look internally, and in the past, several head coaches have come from our own organization.  The position of head coach became available earlier than we expected.  After that, we started conversations within the Technical Heart and management.  After that, with the Supervisory Board and with Marcel himself.   This was all positive, and we had an even better feeling about appointing him.  He knows the players, the organization, and stands behind the club’s philosophy.  Moreover, he did an outstanding job with the reserves last season, with a very clear playing style.  With good and diverse trainings, he improved the players noticeably.”

Marcel Keizer: “The meetings we had were very positive, and I feel a lot of trust from the organization.  I had planned to achiever more good results with the Ajax Reserves next season n the Jupiler League, but things can change quite suddenly in football.  This is, of course, a fantastic opportunity, and I grabbed it with both hands.   Right now I’m still on holiday but soon, I’ll proudly sign the new contract.  I can’t wait to be on the field again, and we’ll need to be ready soon considering the European program.  The goal is to continue in the same vein and playing style as last year, to have a great season, and, naturally, aim to win prizes.”
