Ajax has won its away game against Roda JC by 2-4. Erik ten Hag’s team faced an early deficit, but goals by Donny van de Beek, Hakim Ziyech and Klaas Jan Huntelaar (2) secured three points. Ziyech’s goal was one to remember.
Erik ten Hag had told him to let his feet do the talking. He saw his star player work incredibly hard on his free kick in the past few weeks. That’s what it was all about, football, and goals. He needed to try to let go of the rest.
That’s exactly what Hakim Ziyech did on Wednesday evening in Kerkrade. With a destructive shot in the 25th minute, he scored the 1-2 goal. A fake-out to the left, and bam! Keeper Hidde Jurjus didn’t have a prayer, and Ajax was in the lead.
Roda strong out of the starting blocks
The lead was well-deserved by the Ajacieds, who had experienced an unfortunate start to the game. Where Erik ten Hag had kept the same 11 intact for his first three games, he was forced to make changes against Roda JC. Matthijs de Ligt was suspended and his logical replacement, Max Wöber, was injured.
For this reason, Rasmus Kristensen made his debut as an Ajacied. The young Dane had surely hoped that his first moments in the red-and-white jersey would be somewhat different, as Roda took a 1-0 lead after only two minutes. A pass from the right was wrongly judged by the entire Ajax defense, and Simon Gustafson scored.
9th goal for Van de Beek
Order was restored soon after. In the 11th minute, Donny van de Beek scored his 9th goal of the season after a beautiful attack on the left via Justin Kluivert and Nico Tagliafico. Ajax was dominant in this phase and Ziyech, with his stunning goal, increased the score to 1-2.
Considering the balance of power at that moment, Ajax seemed poised to build on its lead, but Roda had the best opportunity to score before the break. A beautiful long shot by Tsiy William Ndenge was well saved by Andre Onana.
Huntelaar scores beautifully
Without much fuss, Ajax remained in control of the game. It was only in the final 20 minutes that the crowd was jolted awake. Klaas Jan Huntelaar brought the game to 1-3 in the 74th minute. He fell back, initiated an attack, and finally received the ball back via Donny van de Beek, he outplayed Jurjus and made good. Roda fought back soon after via Jorn Vancamp, but The Hunter secured the win in the 82nd minute. He sent the ball against the ropes on an assist by Tagliafico.
